I think everyone has their favorite dark, mystical, or even scary book that they pull out every fall/Halloween. My go-to is an OG young adult book but still a goodie!
Title: Blood and Chocolate
Author: Annette Curtis Klause
Publisher: Random House
Genre: supernatural, romance, teen fiction
Page count: 264
Goodreads synopsis: Vivian Gandillon relishes the change, the sweet, fierce ache that carries her from girl to wolf. At sixteen, she is beautiful and strong, and all the young wolves are on her tail. But Vivian still grieves for her dead father; her pack remains leaderless and in disarray, and she feels lost in the suburbs of Maryland. She longs for a normal life. But what is normal for a werewolf?
Then Vivian falls in love with a human, a meat-boy. Aiden is kind and gentle, a welcome relief from the squabbling pack. He’s fascinated by magic, and Vivian longs to reveal herself to him. Surely he would understand her and delight in the wonder of her dual nature, not fear her as an ordinary human would.
Vivian’s divided loyalties are strained further when a brutal murder threatens to expose the pack. Moving between two worlds, she does not seem to belong in either. What is she really—human or beast? Which tastes sweeter—blood or chocolate?
My thoughts: Like I said, this is an OG young adult fiction book published in 1997 and I first read it when it had JUST come out! But it is still one of my favorites and a book I pull out every Halloween! It’s just a book that has stayed with me all these years and that I love rereading year after year. This book also serves as proof that I was reading werewolf/vampire novels long long long before the Twilight saga came out!
What to say about this book? First of all the writing. Annette Curtis Klause has a delicious DELICIOUS writing style! I was first turned on to Klause when I read her debute book The Silver Kiss that came out in 1992 (no I didn’t read this one when it first came out lol I would have been like 4!) That one is about vampires and between her and Christopher Pike, it is all I wanted to read when I was in middle school! Klause made werewolves sexy long before a shirtless and sweaty Taylor Lautner did. When she describes what it feels like for Vivian to change into a werewolf I can literally hear and FEEL my bones cracking and shivering as though I am the one who is changing! That is how detailed her descriptions are. It’s really just beautiful!
I grew up wanting to be the main character Vivian. She is so strong and beautiful, and the way Klause described the change and the pack and the freedom….ugh I just want to be a werewolf so much! (Is that wrong for a 29 year old to say? Lol)
I really loved the storyline. The best way I can describe it without giving any spoilers away is that it is a coming of age werewolf tale. Vivian starts out unsure of where she fits in with the regular world and her werewolf pack but by the end her destiny and place in the pack is clear and she starts living into the strong young she wolf she was always meant to be!
Now there is a movie that was made BASED on this book and I emphasized based on because the storyline is so different than the original. The movie adaptation is just plain awful. That may sound harsh but please I beg of you do not waste your time with it. The book is so much better!
I hope you give this old gal a try because she is truly one of my favorites and even though I’m not into the supernatural stuff anymore, this book will always stay close to my heart. They just don’t make werewolf novels like this anymore!
